What to expect
Oral assessment: I’ll do an oral assessment of the inside of your baby’s mouth. Checking your baby’s sucking strength and range of motion of the tongue giving me information about how baby is latching and sucking at the breast.
Weight check: I’ll do pre and post feeding weights giving us a snapshot of how much breastmilk your baby is taking in at that feeding.
Positioning and Latching: Watch how your baby is positioning and latching onto the breast, observe a breastfeeding session, and give suggestions and adjustments as we go along.
Structural assessment: If I believe there maybe structural issues with your little one (such as torticollis, pain in the neck, baby favoring one side over the other, jaw clenching issues, etc.) I’ll do a quick and gentle structural assessment. We’ll put your baby on a blanket on my massage table and I’ll observe your baby in Tummy Time, during this time I’ll also teach you the Tummy Time Method! helping baby enjoy tummy time while also working on any tension we may find. Many babies are born with tension due to certain positioning in the womb, difficult labor and delivery, and even oral restriction (lip/tongue tie), this tension can cause latching and positioning issues.
All this will help me get the whole picture of what’s happening with your situation.
I’ll provide you with information, techniques and suggestions to help. I may show you breastfeeding videos, give you links to articles/resources, and a Care Plan you can reference later, so you don’t have to remember everything we talk about!
Together we’ll create a plan that works best for you and your family!
Plan on being together for about 1.5 to 2 hours. Follow-up’s are usually 1 to 1.5 hours
Infant Body Work
I work with children from Birth to 3 years. The type of Infant bodywork that I do combines Craniosacral Therapy (CST) and specialized pediatric massage techniques to gently release tension in your baby’s fascia and craniosacral system. Using these gentle approaches, I help babies relax, improve feeding comfort and ability, and support the development of essential milestones.
Coming into this world is not easy! Factors such as birth interventions, like these examples, or tension from lip and tongue ties can contribute to restrictions that impact a baby’s comfort, feeding, and ease of movement. After birth, we should ideally see babies latching and feeding well, stretching out, extending their arms and legs, and moving their head freely. Some babies hold onto tension, which can make it difficult for them to feed well—whether breast or bottle—and move comfortably, impacting both their overall comfort and feeding success.
During sessions, I apply light, gentle touches—just 5 grams of pressure—along with pediatric massage techniques to help release these areas of tension. This soothing approach often leads babies to take deep breaths, yawn, stretch, or completely relax, it’s such a wonderful thing to see!
Each session is scheduled for 60 minutes. While most babies are ready to wind down around the 45 minute mark, the full hour allows us flexibility to ensure your baby is comfortable and gives us time for a feeding if needed. This allows us to address your baby’s needs without feeling rushed. Through this specialized bodywork, your baby can experience improvements in comfort, mobility, and overall well-being. Including feeding better!
Postpartum & Lactation Massage: Relaxation & Therapeutic Care
Our body does so much—it’s time to give it the care it deserves! Whether you’re pregnant, newly postpartum, nursing, or simply in need of deep relaxation, I offer specialized bodywork to help you feel your best.
Postpartum Massage:
Your body is still healing after birth, and postpartum massage can provide much-needed relief and support during this transition.
These sessions help:
- Soothe neck, shoulders, and back pain
- Improve circulation and reduce postpartum swelling
- Support deep relaxation and emotional well-being
Postpartum massage can be scheduled as soon as you are feeling up to coming in!
Lactation Support:
I offer Therapeutic Breast Massage, which utilizes specialized massage techniques and hot stones to help calm engorgement and release plugged ducts—especially stubborn and recurring ones! This massage promotes lymph fluid movement and reduces inflammation, allowing milk to flow more easily.
After your Therapeutic Breast Massage, it’s very beneficial to nurse your baby or pump. If you’d like, I can also apply Kinesio tape to the breast, ensuring that the placement is appropriate so it does not interfere with your baby’s latch or pump flange. This gentle lifting of the skin allows fluid to flow, which can continue to reduce edema and further improve milk flow after you leave your appointment.
Many moms experience immediate relief and less pain and I will show you techniques to continue the healing at home. Generally 1 -2 sessions is all that’s needed.
Craniosacral Therapy (CST):
CST is a gentle, hands-on therapy that helps release tension and restore balance in the body.
This is beneficial for:
- Chronic jaw, neck, and shoulder tension
- Headaches and migraines
- Stress and nervous system regulation
- Pelvic and sacral alignment, particularly postpartum
CST works with your body’s natural rhythms, using light touch to encourage deep relaxation and healing. It’s a wonderful way to reset your system—can be added to any massage therapy session, no additional charge!
Cupping Therapy:
Cupping is a therapeutic technique that uses gentle suction to release muscle tension, support circulation, and encourage the body’s natural healing response. Cups are placed on areas of tightness or discomfort to help ease pain and promote relaxation.
This approach is especially beneficial for:
- Tight shoulders, back, and hips
- Postpartum muscle recovery
- Supporting circulation and lymph flow
- Deep relaxation and stress relief
Cupping is offered as part of any massage session at no additional charge. Please note: cupping may leave temporary skin markings that can be light to dark that typically fade within a few days.
Melissa Schiff, IBCLC
Craniosacral Therapist, Licensed Massage Therapist, IBCLC
Melissa Schiff, IBCLC, LMT, CST
I’ve spent over a decade supporting families through my work as a La Leche League Leader and in private practice as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
When you work with me, you’re working with an experienced breastfeeding mom. I’ve faced my own breastfeeding challenges. With my first baby, we had just moved to a new state where I didn’t know anyone. I struggled as a new mom, unsure if what I was experiencing was normal. With no examples of breastfeeding in my family, I was trying to survive with a high-needs baby who gained weight slowly and nursed every hour. I spent hours on Dr. Google and was completely exhausted, but VERY determined to make breastfeeding work!
It wasn’t until I attended my first breastfeeding support group that I realized what I was going through was completely normal. I learned to trust my instincts and sought professional help and support from an IBCLC.
With my second baby, I felt more confident. Breastfeeding got off to a much better start, but after two weeks, my baby boy developed skin rashes, itchy eyes, and sneezing. Once again, I needed help. With my IBCLC’s support, we discovered the culprit. He cleared up, and breastfeeding became much easier. I nursed each of my children for over two years until they weaned themselves.
I am a lifelong learner of all things pregnancy, birth, babies, and breastfeeding. This is my passion! I became a La Leche League Leader in 2006 and have been helping mothers and babies ever since. As an IBCLC, I bring clinical expertise and have been in private practice since 2013.
My journey has led me to explore how babies feed with their whole bodies and how body tension can impact feeding. With my combined skills as an Infant CST Therapist, Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT), Certified Pediatric Massage Therapist (CPMT), and IBCLC, I can assess feeding challenges holistically. By addressing oral function and releasing body tension through gentle bodywork and exercises, I help babies feed more comfortably, improve their overall function, and achieve better feeding outcomes.
Whether you are facing breastfeeding challenges, need help with infant feeding, or want to explore bodywork to support your baby’s health and comfort, I am here to support you every step of the way.

“When I had my second son, I had issues latching onto my left breast due to anatomical reasons. We also struggled to get comfortable for each feeding. Two weeks after he was born, I called Melissa. I was happy to meet someone who was very knowledgeable, professional, and personable. Since I also breastfed my first son, I had a few techniques that I was already trying, but to little effect. Melissa took everything a step further and with her help, I am still breastfeeding with ease four months later. I also am able to pump up to 20 ounces a day. I felt comfortable the entire time and I would definitely recommend Melissa to anyone in need of help!” Dierdra, Downers Grove, IL
“After spending the rest of the week really following all your instructions, things are great. Yesterday was the first day back full time pumping at work while the baby was at school. Before I struggled to even get 12 ounces to send with him to school, yesterday I easily pumped 22 ounces! I was able to send him 2 extra ounces (14 ounces) today and still have 8 for my freezer. It is so much less stressful to know that my baby is getting plenty of milk AND I am going to be able to keep that up while away from him. Thank you for EVERYTHING! By committing to following your instructions, I was able to see improvements so quickly. I appreciate everything and will definitely stay in contact. We are hoping to have more babies so I’m sure you’ll be hearing from me again!” Kelly, Homer Glen, IL
“I contacted Melissa on a weekend off an Independent IBCLC’s website. She promptly returned my message and offered professional and clear direction on how to handle my potential problem. She provided me with natural ways to combat my problem, as well as, answered all of my many questions or concerns I shared with her. Melissa was great at troubleshooting to best help my issue(s) at hand. Her working knowledge of breastfeeding and all that comes along with it is evident. Melissa was easy to talk with via phone or text message, followed up with me and offered suggestions that she felt would make my experience a better one breastfeeding my son. I would recommend Melissa’s services to those I know and will be in touch with her down the line for any breastfeeding support I may need.” Jessie, Downers Grove, IL
“I am so grateful to have had Melissa’s services through my first pregnancy. There were so many things I needed to prepare for but really had no clue about. Makana Breastfeeding helped make my first few weeks as a new mother so much easier with the great informational webinar and even guidance with a birth plan. When I ran into some trouble due to having a preemie, Melissa was a great support and helped me get through some rough patches. I don’t know what I would have done without her guidance. I highly recommend Makana Breastfeeding for any new mother planning to breastfeed. No matter where your level of knowledge lies, you are guaranteed to learn more and have an amazing support network.”Jillian, Austin, TX
“Things continue to go great!!! I can’t believe we are doing it!!! I had no faith in us and we are doing it! I just wanted to say that if it wasn’t for you I would have given up. Thank you!!! It really clicked for us on Saturday (a week from the day you first saw us). I was scared to believe that we were doing it because I thought she might take a few steps back again, but she’s been nursing like a champ since then. She only gets one bottle a day (at night), and I think I’m gonna cut that one out for now because she is way more content after breastfeeding vs. bottle feeding. Her next doc appt is in 2 weeks so I will be interested to see what her weight gain is since the tongue tie clipping. Again, thank you! I owe this all to you.” Karen, Naperville, IL
“I really appreciate all of the information you have provided me, it has been extremely helpful, and I feel confident going back to work and feeding her while I am out of the house. The past 2 months have been a whirlwind. It really helped establishing a relationship with you before giving birth. After meeting with you all my questions and concerns about breastfeeding/newborns/changes in general…were answered. While giving birth I took your advice and focused my energy “downward” and pushed low. Labor was a beautiful experience and taking your advice helped me get through it immensely. You are a wonderful person and very educated. I loved hearing about your experiences and advice from your own children. My personal opinion is that it is important to bond together with other mothers before and after childbirth. I was very lucky to have met you and feel no hesitation to reach out for a quick response to my questions or when I need a little advice. I highly recommend your services and have forwarded your contact information to some friends.” Lisa, Winfield IL
