Roots Family Chiropractic - Recovering from Loss or Trauma

Services in a nutshell

Birth trauma can occur with or without parents knowing. But your parental instincts may have picked up on your child expressing signs of discomfort since birth. Chiropractic care plays an important and gentle role in addressing these concerns and helps lay a healthy foundation from the start.

More about us

What does “Birth Trauma” look like in my child?

According to a well-known research study completed by Viola Frymann, DO, 9 out of 10 infants suffer from some sort of birth trauma. This means 90% of the studied infants suffer from some sort of “birth trauma” that includes strain in the neck and cranial areas. Birth trauma can be a result of two separate types of injuries: intervention-based injuries and natural-occurring injuries.

Intervention-Based Injuries

  • C-section delivery
  • Forceps use
  • Vacuum extraction
  • Medications taken via the mother crossing into the infant’s bloodstream at a higher dose than the infant is able to handle

Naturally-Occurring Injuries

  • Umbilical cord wrapping around infant’s neck
  • Infant’s positioning in utero (forms of breech-positioning)

Birth trauma can occur without parents even knowing. But many of your parental instincts may have picked up on your child expressing signs of discomfort since birth that many medical doctors are unable to explain! These can be “symptoms” such as:

  • colic
  • favoring one side during positioning
  • difficulty breastfeeding
  • improper digestion, vomiting
  • irregular breathing and respiration rates
  • asthma
  • imbalance in muscle tone
  • ear infections
  • vestibular (balance) concerns
  • sleeping problems
  • headaches
  • behavioral issues (ADD, ADHD, autism, etc)
  • sensory integration dysfunctions

The Role of a Chiropractor for Children

Chiropractors are aware that these signs of discomfort can be due to misalignments in the cranium and spinal vertebrae during the birth process. These misalignments or “subluxations” place unnecessary pressure on spinal nerves resulting in a lack of communication from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. And this poor communication can account for the complications listed above that are seen in many of today’s children!

The techniques used by chiropractors to adjust infants are much gentler to compensate for the developing frame of the child. According to the ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association), the pressure used to adjust an infant can be compared to the amount of pressure you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato.

Lauren Williams

Hi there, I’m Lauren! I am Dr. Tom’s wife and mama to our little explorer, Oliver. I am a lover of oat milk lattes, outdoor hikes, and relaxing with a good book. I am mostly known for being the boss lady behind the front desk, and “the sticker holder” at Roots Family Chiropractic- which is seriously the BEST job there is.

I have a huge heart for holistic living and sharing all things motherhood. My journey into motherhood has been one I will never take for granted- from the lows of miscarriage, to the highs of a beautiful home-birth, and everything in-between- I would love to walk along side of you! Empathy is my #1 strength and I will be your listening ear and biggest cheerleader all wrapped into one.

If you didn’t know, I am also the writer behind our blog and social media extraordinaire at Roots Family Chiropractic. If you wish to know more about a specific topic, I would LOVE to know. Let’s walk through the journey into health together! You can reach me at .

Dr. Ashley Speller, Office Coordinator/Chiropractic Assistant

Greetings, I’m Dr. Ashley! I am so excited to be joining the Roots Family Chiropractic family as a chiropractic assistant. I obtained my doctorate in chiropractic from Life University in Georgia. Chiropractic is a proactive and natural form of healthcare that allows the body to heal itself from the inside out. My goal is to be an advocate for this very message of chiropractic and educate families in the Chicago area about the many benefits of chiropractic care.

Outside of serving in the office you can find me caring for my 2 young babies. They keep this momma busy! When I have time, I enjoy a good movie or a good book. I love spending quality time with family and friends. I’m always looking for fun, new activities and events for me and my little ones!

As a family chiropractor that loves baby-wearing, I have also been featured on ABC news, CBS, Popsugar, Upworthy, Morning Dose, and more. Dying to know why? Check it out: https://rootsfamilychiro.com/press/
