COMMENTS ON OUTCOMES

Outcomes data are for all births at AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center Glen Oaks, including births attended by both doctors and midwives. Midwives serve a low-risk population and also tend to have lower rates of interventions.

Maternity Care Overview

“At Adventist GlenOaks Hospital’s birthing center, you’ll enjoy a spacious, comfortable place for your labor, delivery and recovery from childbirth. Whatever your birthing preferences are, AMITA Health’s team of OB-GYNs, certified nurse midwives and doulas can work to accommodate them.”

“We offer the option of midwife-attended birth. Combining deep medical expertise and resources with an emphasis on natural childbirth techniques, AMITA Health certified nurse midwives (CNMs) help you stay informed, act as your health and wellness partner and facilitate a safe and healthy pregnancy. We’re there before, during and after childbirth to help give your newborn the best possible start in life. Our midwives work in collaboration with our doctors, listening carefully to you and ensuring you receive the highest quality, compassionate care.”

“In addition, Advocate GlenOaks Hospital offers doula support. A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth. While not a substitute for a doctor or a Certified Nurse Midwife, a doula can help make the childbirth experience more comfortable for the mother and serve as a helpful guide and advocate for her and her family. Doulas aid in breathing exercises, relaxation, massage and other support techniques, which can often lead to reduced labor time, fewer cesarean sections and less medication administered.”

“Other features of our care include:

  • Private Rooms. Your birthing experience will only be shared with those you request to have in the room and our staff.
  • Hiding the High Tech. Your suite is equipped with state-of-the-art monitors and other high-tech medical equipment — neatly tucked out of sight, but immediately available if needed. It’s all part of making your suite look like a cozy bedroom instead of a hospital room.
  • Help is Right at Hand. Our nurses’ station is right outside your door, so we can respond to your requests quickly.
  • Stay Together. Dad or another support person can stay overnight in your suite. Each suite features a couch with pull-out bed.
  • Keeping Pain at Bay. Choose from a full range of options for managing pain, including relaxation techniques or epidurals. You’ll be under the safe care of a board-certified anesthesiologist with expertise in pain management for labor and delivery.
  • Cesarean Delivery? You’ll be well cared for in a special room designed exclusively for mother and newborn. Once your baby is born, you can relax in your private suite.
  • Skin-to-skin contact. The power of first impressions is well known and nothing is more significant than the first time your baby experiences life outside the comfort of your womb. Because the first hour following birth is so momentous, AMITA Health has named it the “Golden Hour.” The goal of the Golden Hour is to provide you and your baby with this important skin-to-skin contact as soon as possible. Many research studies have confirmed that this immediate skin-to-skin contact produces numerous benefits for you and your baby, for full-term and, as appropriate, for premature babies as well.
  • Rooming In? Keep your newborn in your room for as long as you’d like. When you’d like to rest, your nurse can take your baby to our certified Level 2 Nursery to sleep. If you prefer, your baby can remain in your room throughout your stay. Rooming in or in the nursery — the choice is yours.
  • Nurses Who Care About You and Your Baby. You’ll find our nurses compassionate, caring and truly helpful.  Whether you’re a first-time mom or a mom of many, you can look to our nurses for tips on feeding, bathing, soothing and caring for your baby. Our caring doesn’t end when you leave Adventist GlenOaks Hospital.  One of our nurses will call you a few days after you’re home — to check how you’re doing and to answer any questions.
  • Breastfeeding: Best for Your Baby. We encourage all mothers to consider breastfeeding their babies.  In most cases, it’s the healthiest option for your baby’s immunity and growth.  It’s also a good way to bond with your baby.
  • Family & Friends. We know this is a special time for family and friends.  Our visiting hours are flexible and understanding. Dad or another support person can sleep with you in your room using the pull-out couch.
  • Security for Moms and Babies. Every baby is provided an ankle bracelet with identification numbers that match those of the mother’s.  All entrances and exits throughout the center are controlled by an electronic security system. No one can leave or enter the unit without proper authorization.”
