Our Philosophy
Welcome to Authentic Birth Center! We are midwives because we truly believe in the natural process of birth and that women’s bodies were created with the innate ability to bring life into this world. We believe in the spirit of a woman and in her deep inner strength and beauty. And we believe in the power of motherhood, with all of its joys and challenges. By walking alongside you through pregnancy and childbirth, there are endless opportunities to help you discover your true strengths and abilities. And by continuing that journey into the weeks and months postpartum, we have the honor to continue encouraging you as you nurture and support your growing families.
BIRTHING UNDER THE STARS
The process of labor and birth is truly a life changing event. It is full of intense emotions – joys, challenges, and anticipation. It is the role of a midwife to be “with woman…” ensuring that she is physically, emotionally, and spiritually prepared and supported. During your birth experience, we will provide gentle support, respectful reassurance, and evidence-based clinical care. Recognizing that this is your birth experience, it is our role to serve you, your family, and your baby well.
HOLISTIC BIRTH SUPPORT
We believe wholeheartedly in promoting and facilitating natural, physiological birth through:

Familiar midwives and other care providers that are quiet and respectful of each woman’s individual labor process and journey

Encouraging the support and involvement of your partner, doula, or anyone important to you that you invite into your birth experience

A beautiful birthing suite with soft light, that mimics a comfortable home environment

Maximizing comfort – position changes, freedom to eat and drink, and supportive birth tools (birth stool, rebozo, birth ball, etc.)

Use of water for comfort including a large walk-in shower and spa-like birth tub for labor and/or water birth

Personalized care and patience with the pace of each individual labor
HIGHEST SAFETY STANDARDS
We strive for the highest level of safety standards for Mom and Baby throughout labor and birth by:

Well-planned prenatal care, screenings, and education

The presence of two certified providers at the birth of your baby

Monitoring Mom’s vital signs and Baby’s fetal heart tones intermittently throughout labor (using a hand-held Doppler) according to national guidelines

Having emergency equipment and medications on-site and available

Fostering a relationship with local hospitals and emergency personnel to facilitate a smooth transport/transition of care if needed

Owner & Director
My educational background is in public policy. I have a BA from UW-Madison in Political Science and International Relations and a Masters’ Degree in International Public Affairs. Throughout my journey, however, I have found that my passion is more specific than creating or analyzing sweeping policies for the masses. My passion lies in serving individuals, their families, and their communities. Over the years, I have apprenticed with several midwives, both in birth centers and homebirth practices, studied through an academic midwifery program authored by Mercy in Action, and worked with organizations all over the world. I have been a part of development work, birth culture, and women’s empowerment programs in Nicaragua, México, Haiti, Kenya, Tanzania, Texas, New Mexico and presently in Wisconsin. But no matter where in the world I am, I have found the the beauty and power of birth remains the same. It is an intimate and transformative experience in which I am honored and blessed to be a part – every time.
As Authentic’s owner and director, I promise to invest deeply in our team of midwives as they provide compassionate and evidence-based care, educating families on all the options available to them for their birth journey. My goal is to foster a safe, healthy, and empowering experience for every family we serve. I will work to build a community that supports and encourages every patient in their parenthood journey. Ultimately, I believe that the strength gained through birth and the feeling of belonging found here in our spaces will allow these gentle and empowered mothers to impact positive change in their families, their communities, and our world.
