Endeavor Elmhurst Hospital (Elmhurst) [Midwife-Attended Birth]
Elmhurst, IL 60126
Hydrotherapy: Some birthing suites come equipped with whirlpool/bath tubs with Jacuzzi jets while others have walk-in showers with hand-held wands.
Smart pumps deliver, monitor and balance your medications for safe administration while you’re in the hospital. Also, ID badges track when your doctors and nurses enter and leave your room to help ensure you receive the assistance and attention you need.
The Elmhurst Hospital midwives are skilled at supporting natural childbirth, and labor and delivery nurses are also trained to support you using birthing balls, warm showers, massage, position changes and relaxation. If you decide you want pain medication, such as analgesics or epidurals, anesthesiologists are available 24 hours a day.
Elmhurst Hospital is the first hospital in DuPage County to offer nitrous oxide as a pain relief option for women in labor, and it has been adopted by both the hospital’s OB-GYNs and the Elmhurst Clinic midwives.
Family & friends: Elmhurst Hospital has a liberal visitation policy, leaving it up to you who visits you in the hospital. Any adults you invite will be there to support you during labor. Determining who is present during delivery is a decision you can make with your physician or midwife. However, if complications arise, visitors may be asked to leave, as caring for you and your baby is the top priority.
Siblings at birth: If you would like your older children to visit you during labor, they must be accompanied by a responsible adult other than your support person. If you want them to attend the birth, you must have written permission from your provider and the children must take the “Sibling at Birth” class prior to labor.
Partner rooming-in: Each room is equipped with a couch that converts into a bed for your partner’s comfort.
One-on-one nursing care: A nurse will be assigned to you one-on-one during active labor.
Mother-baby nurses are specially trained to assist you and are available 24/7 as you start breastfeeding. Lactation consultants can also come to your room to assist with any breastfeeding difficulties, answer your questions, and offer proper techniques. If there is a medical need to pump breast milk for your baby, a hospital grade pump is available for use in the hospital. Your nurse will instruct you in the correct use of the pump.
The midwives care for women experiencing low-risk pregnancies.
If you develop complications during pregnancy or if your newborn should require special care, the care team at Elmhurst Hospital includes board-certified obstetrician-gynecologists and neonatologists and specially trained nurses (including advanced practice nurses, labor and delivery nurses and neonatal nurses). You’ll also have access to maternal-fetal medicine specialists and pediatric subspecialists.
Each birthing suite comes with a private bathroom, a flat screen TV, and a couch that converts into a bed for your partner’s comfort.

“Midwifery Care: At Edward-Elmhurst Health, we respect your personal choices, and believe in giving you options for your birthing experience. One of these options includes midwifery — offered exclusively at Elmhurst Hospital. Our team of nurse midwives provides personalized care and expertise in a welcoming environment that fosters safety, mutual understanding and respect.
Our nurse midwives are advanced practice nurses (APNs) who are nationally certified and licensed by the state of Illinois. They are specialists in low-risk pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and women’s health. Our midwives also help care for newborns and assist mothers with breastfeeding.
Edward-Elmhurst nurse midwives support choice in birth, so you can take control of your birthing experience, instead of letting the experience happen to you. Count on your midwife to support your choices, cultural preferences and unique needs. The result: an empowering experience with personalized care at its center.
Midwifery and Women’s Health of Elmhurst Clinic offers compassionate and holistic care to low-risk pregnant women and delivers babies exclusively at Elmhurst Hospital. Your midwife will care for you during all stages of pregnancy and childbirth. At Elmhurst Hospital, we support a natural, personalized experience with alternative comfort measures and pain relief during labor, such as hydrotherapy and warm water immersion for labor and birth (should you choose this approach), as well as a VBAC supportive environment for women with previous C-sections who would like to trial labor (and warm water immersion for those meeting specific criteria).
The health of you and your baby are of utmost importance. Should complications arise, your midwife will work with a board-certified obstetrician and the rest of your birthing team to ensure you and your baby are safe and healthy throughout the delivery process.”

More about Elmhurst Hospital:
“Private birthing suites: When you have your baby with us, you get your own private birthing suite. It’s as close as you get to the comforts of home, combined with expert medical care and technology, for a first-class experience. Your luxurious, modern suite comes with a private bathroom, a flat screen TV, and a couch that converts into a bed for your partner’s comfort.
Each room has a birthing (exercise) ball and a comfortable chair for you to use during labor if you desire. For those seeking additional comfort and enhanced relief during labor, some suites come equipped with whirlpool/bath tubs with Jacuzzi jets while others have walk-in showers with hand-held wands.
While you’re here, smart pumps deliver, monitor and balance your medications for safe administration. Also, ID badges track when your doctors and nurses enter and leave your room to ensure you receive the assistance and attention you need.”
Comfort measures: “During labor, we’ll help you achieve the comfort level you desire. Some women give birth with mild pain or discomfort, controlled by comfort measures, relaxation and breathing techniques. Others prefer medication to control pain. Elmhurst Hospital is also the first in DuPage County to offer nitrous oxide as a pain relief option for women in labor, and it has been adopted by both the hospital’s OB-GYNs and the Elmhurst Clinic midwives. Unlike systemic drugs that can cause unwanted effects, nitrous oxide (a tasteless, odorless gas inhaled through a mask) is considered safe to use during labor and can be beneficial for both pain relief and anxiety relief. It also has a quick onset and quickly exits both the mother’s and baby’s system.”
“One on one nursing care: A nurse will be assigned to you one-on-one during active labor. We truly listen to you and let you guide your birthing plan.”
“The Golden Hour: After delivery, you and your baby will stay in your private birthing suite for approximately two hours to recover. This is a great time for you and your partner to get to know your newborn. It’s also an important time for mom and baby bonding. Skin-to-skin contact with your baby has scientifically proven benefits: baby’s temperature, heart rate and blood sugar stabilize faster. And both mom and baby’s stress hormones are reduced by skin-to-skin contact. This is a good time for you to start breastfeeding, if desired. For these reasons, we generally discourage visitors during the first hour after birth.”
“Memento: At Elmhurst Hospital, new moms receive a large water mug.”
“Baby portraits: We work with experienced photographers to capture your baby’s first photograph with a natural, artistic style. Your professional mini photo shoot can take place right in the comfort of your private room and can also include other family members.”

Your doctor and/or a midwife will assess your individual situation to determine if you’re a good candidate for midwifery. While most women are good candidates for midwifery, some aren’t. Those who have diabetes, heart conditions, are prone to seizures, or have other high-risk factors are not appropriate for midwifery care during pregnancy and childbirth.
Elmhurst Hospital offers tours for you and your partner to see one of the actual birthing rooms. The hospital staff will explain the various monitors, equipment and services offered.
