Our newly renovated birthing center includes tubs in many of the rooms.
The midwives are expert at supporting mothers who want to birth naturally, without medications. You can also choose an epidural. The anesthesia team is on-site 24/7.
Siblings at birth: Siblings under the age of 13 may be present for delivery if they have attended the siblings preparation class. Each child must have a separate support person.
Your support people: Two support people are allowed to accompany you during labor. If you want additional support, please discuss your situation with your nurse.
One-on-one nursing care: During active labor, you’ll have the benefit of one-on-one nursing.
Here is our current visitors policy:
Labor & delivery (L&D)
- Visiting hours: 8:30 am–8 pm daily
- Support person access: 24-hour access (overnight privileges)
- Visitor policy: 1 designated visitor and 1 doula (doula does not count as a visitor)
- Additional notes: No visitors under age 18
Antepartum
- Visiting hours: 8:30 am–8 pm daily
- Support person access: Overnight privileges
- Visitor policy: 2 visitors per day during visiting hours
- Additional notes: Children under 12 may visit during sibling hours (4–6 pm); GYN patients may have 2 visitors
Mother & baby
- Visiting hours: 8:30 am–8 pm daily
- Support person access: 24-hour access (overnight privileges, not counted as a visitor)
- Visitor policy: Up to 2 visitors at a time during visiting hours
- Additional notes: Visitors must be age 12 or older
Infant special care unit (ISCU)
- Visiting hours: 24 hours a day
- Support person access: Parents only, 1 per bedside at a time
- Visitor policy: No visitation during shift changes
- Additional notes: No visitors under age 18
Breastfeeding Resource Center: Breastfeeding support and services include:
- Prenatal breastfeeding classes
- Assistance with breastfeeding multiples and other special situations
- In-hospital consultations by referral

24/7 support: Many members of the nursing staff are trained to support breastfeeding, so there is someone available 24/7 to help you with breastfeeding questions.
The midwives care for women experiencing low-risk pregnancies. Should you develop complications in pregnancy or if your baby requires special care, The Center for Maternal and Fetal Health at Evanston Hospital offers consultative, diagnostic and therapeutic services for women experiencing complications or high risk pregnancies.
Level III NICU: Evanston’s Infant Special Care Unit (ISCU) is a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the highest designation for nurseries.
Neonatologists are on-site 24/7.
Many of the birthing suites include labor tubs.

Several staff members are bilingual in Spanish. In-person American Sign Language interpretation is also available. In addition, video and audio interpretation is available in virtually all other languages, as well as telecommunication devices for the hearing/sight impaired.

24/7 C-section team on-site: The midwives do not perform C-sections. If you require a C-section, the surgical team is on-site 24/7.
Family-centered C-section: The option of a family-centered C-section is available. Your partner can be present and your baby will be placed on your chest for skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth. You also have the option of using a clear (see-through) drape.
