COMMENTS ON OUTCOMES

The outcomes reported above are for all births at Mercy Hospital, including births attended by both midwives and doctors. Midwives care for women experiencing lower-risk pregnancies, and also tend to have lower rates of interventions.

Maternity Care Overview

“Since 1852, Mercy Hospital has cared for Chicago’s moms-to-be with compassion and commitment, and our tradition of excellence continues today with our state-of-the art Family Birth Center.”

The Family Birth Center: “The Family Birth Center at Mercy is a unique, full-service facility offering moms-to-be leading-edge care in a comfortable, nurturing setting. Our doctors and nurses work closely with expectant mothers every step of the way—from pre-natal care through delivery and post-natal treatment—to ensure you a happy, healthy pregnancy and the best-possible birthing experience.”

Midwife-attended birth: “Mercy midwives provide comprehensive, personal care to women. We take the time to listen to your concerns and questions, share information and knowledge, and offer you the support and tools you need to live well throughout your life. At Mercy, our midwives provide compassionate, respectful care in an environment second to none; it’s the attention you deserve—all part of our mission to help you live well in the city.”

“Your Mercy midwife will provide for your complete care throughout your pregnancy including birth and postnatal follow-up care. While pregnant, you will have regular prenatal visits with your Mercy midwife. She will answer all of your questions about pregnancy including childbirth, breastfeeding, and parenting.”

“When your special time arrives, you will be welcomed into our beautiful Birth Center where you will receive compassionate, personalized care in a private, spacious birthing suite. During labor, your Mercy midwife will stay with you to offer emotional and physical support throughout the birthing process. She will provide pain relief in the form of massage, acupressure, a birthing ball or beanbag, position changes, and water therapy. Pain medication and epidurals are also available.”

Postpartum care: “Our commitment to Mom continues even after delivery, as we keep a watchful eye for signs of perinatal/postpartum depression. It’s one way Mercy strives to treat the whole woman. From prenatal counseling and care, through pregnancy, delivery and postpartum care, we provide individualized care in a sophisticated medical setting.”

Specialty care: “If a new baby requires specialty care, Mercy offers a Specialty Care Unit, where skilled neonatologists deliver care for premature and special needs babies. Our highly trained staff has years of experience caring for babies with health concerns, and the size of the nursery (just 16 cribs) ensures that both babies and parents receive attentive, compassionate care.”
