Your labor and delivery suite includes a large tub for comfort and relaxation during labor.
If you hope to avoid pain medications, the midwives are skilled in support natural childbirth. If you want an epidural, the anesthesia team is available on-site 24/7.
Round-the-clock visitation is permitted for your baby’s father/support person. Two other healthy adult visitors are welcomed between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.. Sibling visitation is allowed with permission from your nurse.
Individual lactation support: A Certified Lactation Consultant will visit you while you’re in the hospital to ensure successful breastfeeding. The lactation team consists of three International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants and fourteen staff members who are Certified Lactation Counselors.
Prenatal breastfeeding classes are offered.
Breastfeeding support group meets weekly.
Maternal Fetal Medicine: The midwives care for women experiencing low-risk pregnancies. If you develop any complications, Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists are available.
Level IIE Special Care Nursery: Infants who require special attention following birth are cared for in the Level IIe special care nursery, which has extended capabilities and is a member of the University of Chicago Hospital Perinatal Network.
Neonatalogists on site 24/7: More than five neonatal specialists are available 24 hours a day for infants who require special care.
In the mother/baby unit, your room will have a queen-sized bed.
A fridge and microwave are available in the family lounge.

VBAC: The midwives can attend you in a trial of VBAC, working in partnership with a Board-certified OB.
C-sections and vacuum/forceps: The midwives do not perform c-sections or vacuum/forceps deliveries. If you are being cared for by the midwives and require either, the surgical team is available on-site 24/7.
Family-centered C-section: Newborns are placed on mom’s chest in the operating room immediately after birth. Your partner can also be present and you have the option of a see-through drape.
