Monitoring: Obstetrical nurse certified in electronic fetal monitoring assists you through delivery.
Hydrotherapy during labor: In addition to showers in each room, there are three inflatable labor tubs which can be used in any room.
Aromatherapy: Not provided but you are welcome to bring your own.
Pain relief: Available pain relief methods include breathing techniques, medications, and epidurals provided by an anesthesiologist available in-house 24 hours a day.
Nitrous oxide: Use of nitrous oxide was initially suspended due to concerns about COVID 19, but is once again available.
Visitation is permitted at all times for Labor and Delivery.
Visitation for our Mother-Baby Unit follows normal visiting hours with 1 support person allowed to stay overnight.
When a patient does not require isolation precautions, healthy siblings of any age may visit during regular visiting hours. Siblings must remain in the patient’s room at all times.
Visitors who are NOT siblings of the baby must be age 12 years and older.
* While there is no limit to the number of visitors allowed in a patient’s room on the Mother-Baby Unit, the number of visitors, as well as hours of visitation, may need to be amended for various reasons through consensus reached between the nurse manager, charge nurse and physician to meet the individualized emotional, psychological, safety and physical needs of each patient. Patients are also allowed one Certified Doula.
In-Hospital Lactation support: Support from Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) is available in the postpartum unit 24/7.
Post-Discharge Lactation support: After you return home, you can schedule a private, one-hour consultation with a Board Certified Lactation Consultant to discuss your breastfeeding concerns such as if your baby is getting enough food, latching on properly, eating often enough, or if you are experiencing engorgement/breast issues or difficulty with pumping.
Level 2 Nursery with Extended capabilities can care for low-birth-weight infants (2 pounds, 12 ounces or greater), premature infants (30 or more weeks gestation), and infants on mechanical ventilators. Few babies ever need to be transferred to specialized neonatal care centers.
A pediatric hospitalist is onsite 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Neonatalogist make rounds in the nursery daily and are on call.
Three portable inflatable tubs available for use in any room.
Refrigerators are available in each room. A microwave is available on the unit.

What’s more, each room has wireless internet access, a 30″ flat screen TV system, and family-friendly décor. There’s also a comfortable sofa-sleeper so family members can stay around the clock.

Everything for Your Peace of Mind: Obstetrician/gynecologists and our experienced team are on alert to help at any time. In fact, there is an obstetrician/gynecologist in-house 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Upon your arrival, you’ll be “partnered” with a specially trained obstetrical nurse certified in electronic fetal monitoring who’ll assist you through delivery. Our new unit also features mother/baby couplet care, which means that the same experienced nurse will care for both mother and baby until it is time to go home.
This ensures continuity in care and improved communication between the patient, family, nursing staff and physicians. At Silver Cross, we also have several certified lactation consultants available for support to new mom’s who choose to breastfeed their babies. They offer education and support before and after delivery as well as when you return home.
Cesarean Suite: While the birthing suites are fully equipped for labor, delivery, and recovery, some deliveries require surgery. And that’s why we have 3 complete Cesarean suites in our Birthing Center.
Telemedicine: For your added peace of mind, another feature offered by the Silver Cross Birthing Center is Baby Care Connect PDF and Baby Care Connect-Spanish PDF, which is a telemedicine program in conjunction with the Lurie Children’s cardiologists. Telemedicine is a cutting-edge diagnostic tool that allows pediatric cardiology specialists to analyze a baby’s echocardiogram in real-time through a video linkage with Silver Cross.
Safe, Secure Environment: We have a state-of-the-art infant security system along with secured entrances to the Birthing Center to give you peace of mind.
Childbirth Education: We offer a variety of childbirth education programs including:
- Birthing Center Tours
- Breastfeeding Class
- Prepared Childbirth Class
- Registration for childbirth classes is required online.
Outpatient Breastfeeding Clinic: Schedule a private, one-hour consultation with a Board-Certified Lactation Consultant to discuss your breastfeeding concerns such as if your baby is getting enough food, latching on properly, eating often enough, or if you are experiencing engorgement/breast issues or difficulty with pumping. This service requires an order from your physician and will be scheduled through Silver Cross Hospital Central Scheduling. Your insurance will be billed for the visit. Clinic occurs on Mondays and Thursdays.

Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: To ensure babies with special needs can receive all the care they need under one roof – and keep families together close to home – Silver Cross Hospital is pleased to present the Amy, Matthew & Jay Vana Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Adjacent to our Women and Infant Services Birthing Center, the NICU features 24 private, single-family rooms. It’s modeled after, staffed by the neonatal experts in the NICU of Ann & Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and boasts the very latest technology to care for infants:
- NICU Reception DeskBorn before 30 weeks’ gestational age
- Born with birth defects, infections, breathing difficulties or other high-risk conditions
- Born at other nearby hospitals who need highly specialized care
Equipped to Care for Sick Newborns: Although birth can present unexpected complications, there’s nothing our Silver Cross care teams aren’t prepared to handle. In fact, not only is our NICU modeled after Lurie’s NICU, it’s also staffed by Lurie neonatologists around the clock and equipped to care for newborns who require the most advanced treatment, including assisted ventilation, neonatal surgery, nitric oxide therapy, and subspecialty diagnosis, consultation and treatment for complex congenital anomalies. What’s more, all nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, therapists, and lactation consultants have specialized training to provide care in our NICU.
